U2U2
Popmart (Universal)

Let’s be honest the whole ‘stadium rock’ lark was born out of financial necessity rather than as a desirable way of presenting music (there is simply no better way to experience a live show than in a small venue, fact). That said some bands have managed to grab the concept by the nads and squeeze some life into it and U2’s 1997 Popmart tour pushed that particular envelope right up to the edge of parody, boasting lavish special effects, a humongous video wall and a bloody great big lemon. U2 fans are very well served in the DVD dept. (completists will doubtless have an entire shelf dedicated to the objects of their affection) and if you’re only ever going to buy one U2 DVD then we suggest you head for the stunning Elevation double disc set - which not only finds Bono and Co. in roaring form but also is something of a benchmark in how to present a live concert on DVD - but even if you only have a passing interest in the band you will find yourself grinning like a loon at much of this set, and in it’s expanded form it’s become something of a ‘must own’ item for the faithful...

Under The CoversUnder The Covers
(Wienerworld)

If, like us, you like nothing better than sitting down in front of the goggle box and watching ‘the story of…’ type doc’s wherein the ideas, inspirations and just plain blind happenstance behind the genesis of old albums, bands, festivals or, as in this case, album covers are discussed by those responsible, then look no further ‘cos Under The Covers is loaded with fascinating, funny and in some cases death defying details about the work of snapper Henry Diltz, and designer Gary Burden – who’s approach to cover design seems to have mainly consisted of popping out into the desert, getting royally stoned, taking some wobbly pics and then promptly plucking some of the all time great album covers from the wreckage. Along the way some great songs are played, some seldom seen super 8 film is disinterred and Stephen Stills, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Webb and many others are prodded with sticks to help them recall lunatic photo sessions, design battles with tight-fisted record companies and wild parties with Joni Mitchell, Mama Cass and various other Laurel Canyon inhabitees, joyfully reliving the days when album covers were works of art, big enough to roll a joint on and weren’t designed by committee
